Teach Your Infant to READ!

Building reading skills begins at birth! From the moment your baby enters the world he/she can hear the sounds of language all around. It is by hearing the consistent sounds of a native language that babies begin to make connections with sounds, intonations, communication and all variety of skills necessary to learn to read.

Numerous studies have conclusively demonstrated that purposeful reading aloud and talking to infants can have a profound impact on a child's language and reading skills and can create an appreciation and enjoyment of reading for a lifetime.

When an infant is still brand-new, reading anything aloud is beneficial. If you're reading the newspaper anyway, read it aloud to your infant. That precious bundle will not only benefit from learning the phonetic sounds but will also benefit by learning the cadence, tone, structure of reading.

As you walk around the house, talk aloud to your baby about what you are doing. USE CORRECT VOCABULARY and NOT BABY WORDS! Your child has to learn a word for everything and it should be the correct word. No word is particularly more difficult to learn than another at this stage.

As you're out and about with your child PLAY MUSIC and SING ALONG! At first, it can be anything. It's all language and it's all good. (maybe you want to limit SOME vocabulary...)

At about age 5-6 months find a children's artist YOU like and sing along! I always enjoyed RAFFI. He's entertaining and down to Earth, in my opinion. Not the squeeky forced child tone used by so many.

READ to your child EVERY DAY. Spend as much time as you can possibly spend, reading aloud. Talk about the pictures and how they relate to the stories. Point to the pictures and name the objects.

As you read (from the moment the baby begins to look at the book with you) use your finger to point to the text as you read. Your child will learn the proper direction for reading text and how to progress correctly through a book.

Videos are not a substitute for reading. While they may capture attention, they lack the meaningful and purposeful contact of being read TO. When you can't read, videos can be somewhat beneficial because they too, involve language. There are many great videos of children's books available limited use of these videos may help develop a feeling that "reading is fun" but again, are no substitute for personal contact.

Have fun. READ WHAT YOU ENJOY. It will keep you both interested and excited about reading.
