Math Instruction For Elementary/Middle School
Math is frequently a four letter word for elementary and middle school students but it should not be so. You can start the change to making math friendly right now! When math tasks present themselves in your everyday life, talk about them casually. Discuss the task, the math involved in completing the task, why it's important. For example, after a shopping excursion, show your young student your receipt. Ask the child to tell you how the clerk/ cash register totaled your bill. (Which math operation.) Then ask how the clerk/cash register calculated how much change you got. Ask your child to add a duplicate item to the bill. How would that change the total? How would that impact the change you received? If students are grade 5-6 also talk about the tax. How much tax? on what? How would the bill be different without the tax--(the cost difference) Everyday math presents itself in non-threatening situations. If you give your child the opportunity to discuss math, become familiar with the language of math and common math calculations, you will help build confidence and eliminate the mystery and fear that math can generate for people of all ages!
